The limbs of vertebrates start as outpushings of mesenchyme surrounded by a simple epithelium. The distal region is referred to as the progress zone. There has been extensive study of positional information within the limb-bud that determines, for example, the proximal-distal pattern of bone development and the anterior-posterior specification of digits.
