CACHECTIN

cachectin: translation

Protein produced by macrophages that is responsible for the wasting (cachexia) associated with some tumours. Now known to be identical to tumour necrosis factor (TNF). Has three 17 kD subunits, all derived from a single highly-conserved gene.
